9-9-2014 NOTES
Day Three:
Formative assessments. Adjustments to teaching and learning
Built into our culture no failing way of teaching now take as many times as you need to to learn
Permission to fail...It is ok Use Gamification in our classrooms. Expecting to learn from failure. We need to teach this to our parents and students. Assessing all the time. Summative Assessment at the end of the course. Formative assessment: not high stakes....assessing all the time.
Examples: Snapshots of the class, the PULSE....
Journaling, self assess, ungraded quizzes, peer assessments, etc.
Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course. Formative assessments help teachers identify concepts that students are struggling to understand, skills they are having difficulty acquiring, or learning standards (Links to an external site.) they have not yet achieved so that adjustments can be made to lessons, instructional techniques, and academic support (Links to an external site.).
Formative assessments can provide valuable information to teachers and students. With rich feedback and data students can adjust their learning goals, learn more about their own strengths and weaknesses, and make adjustments to their learning habits. Teachers can also use the data they gather from formative assessments to identify students who may need additional interventions or reteaching, while also making adjustments to their own teaching style, pacing, and curriculum.
Examples of Formative Assessments
It's imperative that educators use the information gained from formative assessments to refocus student learning, adjust expectations, encourage students to build on their progress, and help the students who are struggling to meet expectations with additional resources and support.

Class Activity
Today we will review several tools that you can use as formative assessments in the classroom: Infuse Learning, Socrative, Skyward, Canvas, Edmodo, NearPod, and Quizlet. Look through the following blog post with a partner and pick out any tools you may have already used. You can also eliminate the tools that you will look at today. Find a completely new tool or app and do a quick review of the resources linked to the blog. Be prepared to share the name of the tool and one key feature that you think would make it a valuable tool for doing a formative assessment of the learners in your class.

9-2-2014 NOTES
Day TWO:
Review Data Dashboard
Google forms review...Need to use more....Gamification is using elements of games not necessarily video games. Leveling, points, competition, no curve here... Engage, teach, entertain, measure.
What Gamification is Not and Is: Behavior grades vs knowledge grades Assignments not handing them in.
Marriage between Mastery Level and GPA's. Can't get rid of GPA's.
Redo notes lost notes need to save more often
Practiced using Class Dojo, Class Badges. These seem to be used for marking behaviors you want to focus on with your class.
Online game apps we demonstrated from groups. Talked about the pros and cons of each. Our group was FlipQuiz. All together I liked Jeopardy labs.
Simulations we talked about alittle. Demonstrated Mission US and Game Up.
Avatars was interesting. I was not aware of people being into creating their own avatars. It is a Big deal.
